Sweet Cheeks Winery’s 2024 Growing Season: A Promising Vintage

As we embrace the heart of the 2024 growing season here at Sweet Cheeks Winery, we’re excited to share an update on what has been an eventful year for our vineyard. The Willamette Valley is buzzing with anticipation, and our own vines are showing promising signs of a memorable vintage.

A Rainy Start with a Bright Forecast

This year, our growing season kicked off with heavier than average spring rainfall, setting a solid foundation for the vines. The increased soil moisture from the wetter-than-usual winter has been instrumental in nurturing our vines, preparing them well for the summer heat. With this ample moisture, we’ve been able to manage the summer temperatures effectively, ensuring that our vines remain healthy and productive.

A Season of Contrasts and Optimism

Our vineyard’s development has been closely aligned with the region’s historical averages for growing degree days—a measure of heat accumulation that is crucial for vine development. Budbreak occurred right around the third week of April, and with recent stretches of sunny skies and warmer temperatures, we are on track for an excellent harvest.

The combination of variable temperatures and consistent sunshine has created ideal conditions for vine growth, striking a perfect balance between warmth and cooler periods. This trajectory has us eagerly looking forward to a classic Willamette Valley vintage with high hopes for exceptional quality.

Vineyard Dynamics and Flowering Progress

In our vineyard, the effects of a cooler, wetter spring have contributed to strong and steady growth. The combination of a good moisture reserve and recent stretches of beautiful weather—consistently in the 70s and 80s—has accelerated growth, positioning us well for a fruitful harvest.

Looking Ahead

As we head into October, we’re thrilled to share that the 2024 harvest is already well underway at Sweet Cheeks Winery. With favorable conditions throughout the growing season, we’re optimistic about the quality of the grapes we’re bringing in. While we’re still in the midst of harvest, early indications suggest that this vintage has the potential to be truly exceptional. We can’t wait to see how this season unfolds and to share the results with you in the coming months. Stay tuned for updates as we continue to process and evaluate this promising harvest!
